The betrayal you feel is sharp and it stings very deeply – and you can often feel left without knowing quite what to do. Here are some tips and advice on how to deal with a cheating spouse.

Get the Proof- The first thing you need to do is get the proof that your spouse is cheating. While this sounds very difficult and hard to do, the truth is that you need it before confronting your spouse. If things end up in divorce, you need the proof that you were not in the wrong and that your spouse was. This may not even happen but it’s something you have to think about.    You may need it in establishing alimony, child support or other payments and even setting custody and visitation. There are digital phone recorders and video cameras that you can get which are very discreet and can help you catch your cheating spouse.

Confront Your Spouse- After you have the proof you need, you will need to confront your spouse and let him or her know that you know. This is a very difficult part of dealing with your cheating spouse, but it must be done. Gauge their reaction – whether they deny it or own up to the cheating. Ask them what they want.    Why have they cheated on you? Do they have feelings with the ‘other man or woman,’ and whether they want a divorce or not. This is a hard question to ask but it’s necessary. It could have been a one-time fling that was a mistake or it could be something more serious. You need to know what your spouse wants.   keeping a tainted one.

Figure Out Your Next Steps- Whether or not you will be moving on with your spouse, you will still need to move on. If you have decided to try and save the marriage, you will probably need some sort of marriage counseling in order to build back the love and trust that infidelity breaks down.  If you will be moving on without your spouse, it’s important that you take care of your feelings and emotions. Talking to a professional might help you to deal with the pain and anger.
